Why are there so many domain extensions

Primarily, they help to categorise domains. For example, a .ltd.uk domain would belong to a limited company in the UK, while a .au domain would be relevant mainly to Australians.
Another benefit is that there are now more short domains available. When there were fewer extensions available, many of the short domains had already been purchased, compelling newcomers to have very long domain names.
