What is a Content Delivery Network (CDN?

Updated May 18th, 2021 at 10:08 BST

If you are looking at ways to improve your websites performance and/or security, one potential option to consider is using a content delivery network.

A CDN will allow you to optimise your site in a number of ways. For example CDN's will optimise load times from your website regardless of the browser or device that the user is accessing your website through.

Other advantages that a CDN can provide is improved resource loading for scripts which can cut down the time it takes for pages to render. CDN's can also provide options for additional image compression and optimisation - which will reduce page load times by shrinking the size of the images hosted on your website.

A CDN isn't used to only improve the performance of your website, but to also improve the security of your website. A CDN can be used to quickly identify attacks being made against your website and block the IP addresses of the hackers to prevent downtime or disruption of your website as much as possible.

All of our hosting accounts support CDN's and they are usually really simple to configure. Most of the time its just a case of pointing Name Servers or A records over to a specific location.

You can check our Security Packages that also include CDN functionality.
